Indian Space Research Organization (LAGO ISRO) has announced that India will launch its first analog space mission from Leh, Ladakh. Led by ISRO Human Space Flight Centre, the mission was developed in collaboration with AAKA Space Studio, University of Ladakh and IIT Bombay.

“India’s first analogue space mission has been launched in Leh. It is a joint effort of Human Space Flight Centre, ISRO, AAKA Space Studio, University of Ladakh, IIT Bombay, Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council.” ISRO said.

This mission will be used to develop suitable systems for astronauts to live in harsh geological environments such as the Moon and Mars. Ladakh’s arid climate, high altitude and barren terrain resemble conditions on Mars and the Moon. So the researchers feel that this is a suitable place for analog research. What is an analog mission?: According to NASA, analog missions are field tests of space travel conducted under extreme weather conditions. It involves government agencies, academia and industry working together to analyze their space travel preparations.
