Dr. Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan Birthday:
Teacher’s Day is celebrated on 5th September across India. It was the second President and first Vice President of India Dr. Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan’s birthday. Teacher’s Day is celebrated on the birth anniversary of respected educationist Dr Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan. Radhakrishnan was immensely loved by the students due to his wonderful qualities and charisma. His personality evoked great respect from his students. He suggested to a group of students who were eager to celebrate his birthday to celebrate it as Teacher’s Day.
Dr. When Radhakrishnan served as the President of India from 1962 to 1967, his students and friends asked him to allow him to celebrate his birthday on 5 September. Dr Radhakrishnan said that he did not agree to the ostentatious celebration, but that day I would be more than happy. It is said that it was celebrated as Teacher’s Day.
Although September 5 is celebrated as Teacher’s Day in India, World Teachers’ Day is celebrated on October 5 in some parts of the world. Realizing that it is everyone’s duty to pay tribute to teachers who make a significant and lasting difference in a student’s life, UNESCO declared October 5 as World Teachers’ Day in 1994.
Historical Significance of Teacher’s Day:
As mentioned earlier, Teacher’s Day is a day to pay respect to the teachers who taught us knowledge and wisdom and showed us the way of life. The role of teacher is very important in every student’s life. The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and the International Labor Organization (ILO) put forward a recommendation in 1966 on the status of teachers.
The UNESCO Recommendation helps to establish standards for the rights and obligations of educators and reflects the requirements for their initial training, continuing education, recruitment and working conditions.
The UNESCO recommendation sheds light on establishing basic principles about teachers’ rights and responsibilities, their initial and ongoing education standards, teacher recruitment policies, employment conditions and the quality of the teaching and learning environment.
Teacher’s Day in India:
Education Day was celebrated in India since 1962. On this day, Sarvapalli Radhakrishna is honored in schools and colleges, along with honoring and commemorating teachers. Special programs are also held in schools and colleges on this day.
